“The Microbiology Interview: What are your plans?”

….or where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years time?

I find this one of the most interesting interview questions. Too few plans and you may be labelled as being of low ambition and motivation. Too many and the prospective employers may be worried that you are about to upset the apple cart….

It is essentially a no-win situation but a question that potentially reveals a lot about the candidate nevertheless. I doubt however if the question is often answered in an interview with complete honesty.

Outside the rather artificial situation of an interview, it is however a very important question that we should often ask ourselves. What are our plans for the future?

Life is too short not to…

I tend to keep my own future plans in microbiology to myself (to avoid being laughed at!). I might divulge a little at an interview but I very much believe that future career and life plans are your business, not theirs.
