“When things don’t quite fit”

It is a public holiday here in NZ, Waitangi Day, so not planning to write much.

Here is a quote from Isaac Asimov

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds the most discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny…” .

This is very true on the microbiology benches, where it is when we say “That’s funny” or “That’s odd”, that we know we might be onto something exciting.

p.s. I have added a couple of short powerpoints to the website, one on Bacterial vaginosis, the other on Trichomonas.

“Learning to forget”

Here is a nice quote from Albert Einstein. He never shyed away from questioning conventional wisdom…

“Never memorise something that you can look up.”

Well I wish that quote had been read by my teachers and examiners! It would have saved a whole lot of grief and created much more time for extra-curricular activities….

There is plenty of scope within microbiology, particularly bacteriology, for memorising useless facts. I have tried hard not to stray down this path.
